11/25/2005 Bill Moyer It is time for Congress to step up to the plate and clarify that it is not in America's interest or consistent with our values to use chemical weapons or bomb journalists. Seems ridiculous that this should even be necessary, but with the persistent dismantling of previously accepted norms over the past five years we've all had to step up to defend the obvious. Once again the Cheney-Bush administration has put our country in danger with its hypocritical, anti-democratic disdain of international norms and international law. Similar to the infamous remark by Madeleine Albright that the death of 500,000 Iraqi children was "a price worth paying," Bush's sinister "jokes" about bombing al-Jazeera coupled with recent revelations regarding the use of white phosphorous as a weapon in Falluja further undermine American legitimacy around the world. Our current administration has repeatedly distinguished themselves with their dangerous stupidity. From early pronouncements of "Crusades," to their enticements to insurgents to "Bring it on!" they have continually endangered rather than protected Americans. Consciously or un-consciously they have served as the single most effective propaganda and recruitment agent for al Qaeda. I'm repeatedly struck by how these so-called adversaries, justify and prop each other up, while sane people are caught in the middle and drug down a path of perpetual war, paying with their freedoms, tax dollars, social services, and innocent blood. As Senator McCain recently broke ranks to declare torture unacceptable, someone or some group in Congress must do the same now. Regardless of the statements and tactics employed by this administration or the military under their command, the American people and the American system cannot allow the use of chemical weapons (the irony here is unfathomable) nor can we condone the targeting of journalists. Who will have the Backbone to stand up this time? Decent people everywhere are waiting.
