This person is responsible for maintaining the welfare of workers, assisting the efforts of employers, and monitoring the health of the economy. She or he administers numerous employment laws and all of the Department of Labor's agencies. The Department of Labor includes more than 17,000 full-time employees and a budget approaching $60 billion.

Nominee's Background:

Cofounder and publisher of Business Ethics, a national publication on corporate social responsibility based in Minneapolis. Author of "The Divine Right of Capital: Dethroning the Corporate Aristocracy," which underlines the anti-democratic aspects of corporate law and governance, and argues for a new model of the corporation as responsible to internal and external parties, including workers, communities and the environment as well as stockholders and executives.
