Position: Secretary

The secretary is the president's foreign policy adviser. The incumbent is responsible for coordination among various agencies in developing and implementing foreign policy; leading and coordinating U.S. representation abroad; conveying U.S. foreign policy to foreign governments and international organizations through U.S. embassies and consulates in foreign countries and diplomatic missions to international organizations; conducting negotiations and concluding agreements and treaties on issues ranging from trade to nuclear weapons; and coordinating and supporting international activities of other U.S. agencies and officials

Nominee's Background:

Anthony Arnove a is the editor, with Howard Zinn, of Voices of a People's History of the United States , the primary-source companion to A People's History of the United States. He is also editor of Iraq Under Siege: The Deadly Impact of Sanctions and War and a collection of interviews with Howard Zinn, Terrorism and War. An activist based in Brooklyn, New York, he is on the editorial board of the International Socialist Review and Haymarket Books, and is a member of the National Writers Union and the International Socialist Organization. He also has contributed to The Struggle for Palestine (Haymarket Books) and has written for Z Magazine, The Nation, In These Times, Monthly Review, the Financial Times, and other publications.

Nominating Speech:
Anthony's grasp of US involvement i Iraq, and its relationship to historical parallels in US history give him a particularly strong advatage in proposing alternatives to empire building.
