Backbone Puppet Makes Its First Appearance In Boston

07/23/2004

The Backbone Campaign's 70' puppet came out in the open at the Boston Social Forum at the University of Massachusetts / Boston on Friday the 24th. The puppet was preceded by the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band, a perfect companion. The Second Line Band's motto is "we aim to please if the cause is true and the time is right."

The Backbone Campaign's Artistic Director, Kevin Long, directed the puppet around the UMass/Boston plaza area, following the band and eventually circling around them.

Lead Puppetista Jim Farrell directed the building of the puppet before the performance with the help of a number of volunteers. It was quite an adventure getting the puppet across the country disguised as airline baggage, especially the 10' bamboo poles we're now using to hoist it off the ground.
