Backbone Meaningful Movies: Food Coop
The Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn, founded in 1973, is probably the best implemented socialist experience in the United States.
Come get inspired at the screening of the documentary “FOOD COOP” - which takes us deep into the belly of the Park Slope Food Coop, one of America's oldest cooperative food supermarkets, with a healthy dose of insight and wit. The screening is Tuesday, September 11, 6 pm at Vashon Theatre.
Nestled deep in New York City, you can find this highly prosperous institution, just as American and certainly more efficient than Wall Street, but whose objective is entirely non-profit. Working against everything that defines "The American Way of Life," the basic principles of the Park Slope Food Coop are simple: each of its 16,000 members work 2.75 hours per month to earn the right to buy the best food in New York at incredibly low prices.
Through FOOD COOP, you will see this institution come to life and witness how the enthusiasm that animates the Park Slope Food Coop demonstrates a potential for change; how the coop's mode of participation viscerally teaches democracy to those who take part in its activities.
Admission is by donation and the event is made possible thanks to generous support from Vashon Theatre and Island Green Tech. The event is part of the Backbone Meaningful Movies series, a project of the Meaningful Movies Project.
ALERT: Please notice and spread the word about the location change to Lisabeula Park/Beach.
In August 2009 Islanders created the first human orca mural on the shores of Maury Island, celebrating our win of stopping an industrial gravel mine from overtaking our Island.
When We Fight We Win.
Now, nine years later we are being called again to step up our creative activism for the orca, to honor Tahlequah's message to urgently restore habitat in the Puget Sound for the Southern Resident orcas.
Tahlequah, Vashon Island hears your call.
The tide on August 25th at 11:00 am is perfect to create a human orca mural on the beach of Pt Robinson. In partnership with the Vashon Park District, we'll meet at the beach at Lisabeula and form ourselves into the shape of an orca.
Will you sign up to be part of this creative action? You will need to:
- wear black clothing
- if you have one, please bring a black umbrella to help fill out the space
- plan to arrive ON THE BEACH no later than 10:30am
- carpool if you can; parking is extremely limited
We expect the photo to happen at 11:00am.
If you're able to help organize this event, contact firstname.lastname@example.org. We need assistance with media outreach, carpools, logistics. We need YOU!
