"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed if it is not faced."
Backbone Meaningful Movies and Vashon SURJ- Standing Up for Racial Justice bring the award winning documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” to Vashon Theatre, Tuesday, April 10 at 6 pm. The film envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, a radical narration about race in America, using the writer's original words, as read by actor Samuel L. Jackson.
Check out the film's trailer here. A facilitated discussion will follow the screening.
Alongside a flood of rich archival material, the film draws upon Baldwin's notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., to examine and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America. The film explores Baldwin's idea that "not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed if it is not faced."
Thank you to Vashon Theatre and Island Green Tech for their generous support of this event, as well as the Meaningful Movies Project.
