Update from Phil (Jan 2, 2020)
I am overwhelmed by the amount of support, generosity, and love I have received since letting my healthcare situation be known. Thank you to everyone who called, texted, hugged, donated, or otherwise showed me love and support. For those I haven't responded to yet, I hope you understand I have a lot going on but please know that your reaching out is appreciated.
Although I didn't get my Christmas wish, I did get a great surprise for the new year. I got a call from my nurse last night and it turns out that my doctor had been continuing to talk with CareFirst unbeknownst to any of us, and the VP chief medical officer approved the medication. I should have it by the end of the week.
I feel like part of this victory is because of the momentum my story gained on social media thanks to your help spreading it, the light projections on the building, and perhaps rumors of an action at their HQ.
I know that I am far from the only one struggling in our healthcare non-system and hope that we can figure out a way to use what we have learned to grow to help others who may not have the same tools and resources to push back against insurance companies. Rest assured that I will continue to fight and get into good trouble as I am able.
Thank you so much for showing up for me in my time of need.
With love and gratitude,
Phil
