Hello Vashon!
For those of you who don’t know us, we’re the Backbone Campaign. We’re small, we’re scrappy, and for over 22 years we have pushed the boundaries of protest and free speech in nearly every imaginable direction with what we call Artful Activism.
From the very beginning, our roots have been deeply embedded in this community of artists, activists, and dreamers driven to protect what we love for our - and future - generations.
For those of you that do know us, and you are many, you are keenly aware that this island can manifest incredible things – and Backbone is certainly one of them. We truly believe our success would not have been possible without the enormous support and creativity of this community.
Your support gave us permission to take a chance, to go out on a limb, and to attempt seemingly impossible things. To be the David to so many Goliaths in the world. You were there to support a vision of not only what is possible, but what is right, what is good, and what will benefit us all - using humor, satire, and beauty.
But never before have we felt the call so urgently from a growing resistance of everyday heroes standing up and fighting back to reclaim our democracy. And never have we felt so uniquely qualified to answer that call and rise to the challenge by providing the tools, training, and tactics that folks are hungry for.
Our giant We The People Constitution Preamble, designed and painted by local artist Steffon Moody, has become a central symbol of the movement to protect and defend our democracy. Seen by millions during the No Kings protests in June and October, it evokes the best in all of us and lifts up every community for a more just and equitable future. Our new "Mock & Awe" campaign in collaboration with some of Backbone’s founding artists, including Bill Jarcho, Clare Dohna, and Evan Simmons features a new cast of characters: the Impeachment Chain Gang and a swarm of LICE Agents.
While headline grabbing mobilizations like No Kings are incredibly important, we are equally proud of the hundreds of small, consistent, visibility actions that are building affinity and skills among small groups of true patriots across our nation. Nearly every day we hear from more people eager to show up and skill up to fight for our future.
It’s why we can’t stop and why we urgently need your support to seize this moment of growth and momentum.
Our success has always relied upon individual donors. It is the generosity of people like you that allows us to show up for communities right here at home and across the country. Your support allows us to keep our decades of experience flowing to the next generation of artful activists.
We don't have the staff or bandwidth to spend a lot of time fundraising. That’s why this end of year drive is critical for shaping how we show up in the coming year. So, please, dig deep to make a meaningful, tax-deductible one-time or monthly, sustaining contribution to keep Backbone and this movement growing.
With love and gratitude,

Bill Moyer, Executive Director Backbone Campaign
PS: Inspired by what we do? Please consider joining our Lumbar Club with a monthly donation of $22 (or more) to celebrate our 22nd birthday!

“I’ve accomplished many things that I am proud of but what gives me the most pride is seeing the “We the People” banner become THE symbol for the current wave of people power. Imagery can serve no higher purpose than to bring people of good will together. I am humbled by Backbone’s unrelenting dedication to this cause.”
