Backbone Campaign amplifies the aspirations of "We the People" with creative strategies and artful activism to manifest a world where life, community, nature, and our obligations to future generations are honored as sacred.

Backbone Campaign Pledge of Nonviolence: Backbone Campaign is a nonviolent movement-building organization that utilizes creative tactical tools and artful activism and is strongly committed to nonviolence in all of its work. We unequivocally condemn any form of violence, property destruction, or advocacy of violence by representatives of, or participants in Backbone-affiliated actions. We will not condone any actions that could endanger our supporters, the public, or counter-protestors. We consider any call for violence or behavior inconsistent with the above to be agent-provocateur-like behavior, and it will not be tolerated. To participate in Backbone actions, participants must agree to this nonviolence pledge.

What about the "legal vs illegal" argument?

Backbone Campaign deployed a banner over I-5 last week. It read "Immigrants Make America Great" a message that should be a truism that gets little reaction, but that wasn't the case. The rush hour commuters practically jumped out of their vehicles with enthusiasm. I've been doing this sort of thing for 22 years and this reaction was unprecedented. A photo taken by a driver went viral on multiple platforms. The few negative responses online were mostly framed with the legal vs illegal dichotomy. So, this morning I thought it would be interesting to dig into that. The result was interesting. Immigrants Make America Great

What a difference four people standing on an overpass for an hour can make.  Last week, sickened by the scapegoating of immigrants and unconstitutional actions of Trump, Team Backbone assembled a giant overpass banner reading, Immigrants Make America Great. We deployed it on a Seattle overpass on Thursday for rush hour commuters to see. The response was INCREDIBLE! We reached an estimated 30k people with nearly 50% of them waving, honking and expressing a palpable sense of relief and gratitude.  When people are disheartened and fearful, is exactly the moment when when standing up with backbone in a public and principled way matters most.    Continue reading
