Remembering our friend Alessandra Mondolfi, artful activist extraordinaire

Backbone Campaign mourns the loss of Alessandra Mondolfi, who passed away January 3, 2024. We remember Alessandra for her virtuosic artful activism work that shut down Homestead Children's Detention Camp and her many other creative projects. In 2018 she was our artist in residence at our annual Action Camp, helping us create imagery to protect salmon and orca. In Sept 2019, Backbone Campaign presented Alessandra with a Backbone Award, and she led us in making a replica of her epic Declare a Climate Emergency Banner.

Our friend TinaMarie wrote on Alessandra's FB Tribute page:

Passionate, fierce, authentic, talented, artistic, beautiful, driven, independent, caring, funny, serious, smart, focused, relentless.  Alessandra was all of this and much more.  And with those traits came the inevitable periods of sadness, disappointment, doubt, depression, exhaustion and anxiety.

She cared deeply about injustices and those suffering from them.  When Alessandra looked, she was unable to look away.  This care and determination led her to act on the issues she held dear including the environment, wars, immigration, the immigrant children locked away, our democracy, women's rights, LGTBQ rights, human rights and more.  She had so many talents but many of you know of her incredible ability to find the exact right words and marry them with an artistic vision that resulted in the creation of an endless number of artistic props meant to shed light on an issue.  Those banners (big and small), signs, light projections, paintings and jewelry brought life to our causes.  For those who knew of Alessandra as an artist and activist, many of you held those signs and banners for days or months on end.  I was lucky to witness her talents and her endless capacity to create.  Quite honestly, she was unable to stop herself.  I know that the light she shined on injustices led to meaningful change....

... I hope that you will remember our dear friend Alessandra Carolina Mondolfi with love in your hearts.  As a memorial to her, I think she would say to follow your heart, hug your loved ones, care for our world and the people in it and to fight for what you believe is worth fighting for.
