Backbone Campaign amplifies the aspirations of "We the People" with creative strategies and artful activism to manifest a world where life, community, nature, and our obligations to future generations are honored as sacred.

Backbone Campaign Pledge of Nonviolence: Backbone Campaign is a nonviolent movement-building organization that utilizes creative tactical tools and artful activism and is strongly committed to nonviolence in all of its work. We unequivocally condemn any form of violence, property destruction, or advocacy of violence by representatives of, or participants in Backbone-affiliated actions. We will not condone any actions that could endanger our supporters, the public, or counter-protestors. We consider any call for violence or behavior inconsistent with the above to be agent-provocateur-like behavior, and it will not be tolerated. To participate in Backbone actions, participants must agree to this nonviolence pledge.

We the People on display at Folklife 2026!

We the People featured at NW Folklife Festival this weekend! Two copies will be at Seattle Center this weekend at the NW Folklife Festival, one at the Mural Amphitheater Stage, near the Space Needle and another in the International Fountain Pavilion, with pens for signing. Use this chance to add your signature in time for it to be taken to DC this July 4th! Over the last 19 years, Backbone's giant We the People banner has served as an icon of people power and our aspirations to fulfill the shared mission of creating a more perfect union. Adding two more Preamble sections has allowed it to appear in even more cities in the past year, collecting signatures and grabbing the attention of the press and public as a symbol of resistance and resilience. Join the Backbone Campaign Team on Saturday, July 4th as we roll out 700 feet of We the People, in the streets of DC.

What's Happening:

On July 4th - our nation’s 250th birthday - Backbone Campaign will roll out the most massive We the People ever seen, representing our nation’s unifying social contract, aspirations, and national mission.

The Preamble will be 700 feet long, with tens of thousands of signatures and messages.

In addition, we’ll integrate elements of Backbone's Procession for the Future, a visual representation of a confident and propositional progressive populism that appeals to the best in people.

We need your help to pull this off. We estimate it will take approximately 350 people holding the We the People to move it through the streets, to the National Mall.

Please Note: Since the Trump Administration has refused to issue permits, this procession will be un-permitted. By RSVP'ing you are agreeing to Backbone Campaign's Pledge of Nonviolence.

Why?

Amidst this moment of national crisis, unprecedented corruption, and concentration of unchecked executive power by the Trump Administration, we stand not merely in opposition, but lean into the proposition in Order to form a more perfect Union. The DC action will be a Procession for the Future, an assertion of a vision for the future in which the arc of history continues to bend toward justice, expands liberty, and increases the welfare of all.

Together, we’ll build our vision to own the 250th Birthday of the USA with an enrolling, joyous and beautiful expression of the promise and potential of We the People - to "create a more perfect union" - of, by and for the people. And to declare that we are NOT going back to the status quo.
