Backbone Campaign Pledge of Nonviolence: Backbone Campaign is a nonviolent movement-building organization that utilizes creative tactical tools and artful activism and is strongly committed to nonviolence in all of its work. We unequivocally condemn any form of violence, property destruction, or advocacy of violence by representatives of, or participants in Backbone-affiliated actions. We will not condone any actions that could endanger our supporters, the public, or counter-protestors. We consider any call for violence or behavior inconsistent with the above to be agent-provocateur-like behavior, and it will not be tolerated. To participate in Backbone actions, participants must agree to this nonviolence pledge.

We invite you to join us in reclaiming our democracy by building a populism that appeals to the best in people, not the worst. Stand up, Skill up & Pitch-in for social, economic, and environmental justice with boldness and creativity! Amplify your impact with artful activism that earns media and makes people feel empowered and emboldened.

A digital projection on the Portland, Maine Police Department

Portland Maine has been holding daily protests after George Floyd’s brutal death by a Minneapolis police officer. With a heavy police presence, Peaceful protests turned dangerous in a matter of minutes it seemed. All the usual tricks that were going on nationwide were happening right here in Portland Maine. Rubber bullets, tear gas, pepper balls, arrests...complete militarized law enforcement. However, it felt that the tide had changed overnight. Public sentiment around law enforcement behavior changed drastically. People were demanding answers from the Portland PD, they were under increased scrutiny. So the riot gear disappeared. Law enforcement presence declined drastically the following nights A light projectionist set up in front of the Portland PD station to shine these messages on to their building each night. Growing Food Resilience on Vashon Island

Since the end of March, Backbone Campaign has mobilized over 30 volunteers to safely plant, harvest, weed, construct, and organize at Matsuda Farm, Vashon Island's not for profit farm. They have given over 400 hours to grow de-commodified food! Continue reading

Solidarity Brigades Spotlight Calls for Strike
